This was the proposal submitted to the international design competition held for the Korea Cultural Service Center in
Manhattan, New York City, the center of global culture. It was planned as a new concept cultural community that can
accommodate the unique traditional heritage of Korean culture, the future vision of Korea and the characteristic of
regional culture. The cultural exchanges in Manhattan happen in the outdoor spaces such as streets, stairways and
parks. The Korea Cultural Service is also designed as an open space that gives ground for rest and socializing for
everybody like Korean people do under the village-tree in typical rural villages in Korea. The basic motifs were taken
from the celadon porcelains of Goryeo dynasty and Joseon dynasty so that the Korean nature can be expressed and
experienced. There are front garden and rear garden both following the traditional Korean garden design. In addition,
exhibition hall, performance hall and ‘five-sense experience space’ utilizing IT and CT had been provided.
