Collaboration : Bjarke Ingels, Thomas Christoffersen, Andre Schmit, Kamilla Heskje, Daram Park, In the overall
masterplan the sites R4a, R4b together form the Wood Archipelago. Especially within the sites of R4a and R4b, the
masterplan foresees a high density of towers, all of them aiming to get an optimum of sunlight and views. In order not
to further densify the massing our design keeps the footprints of the towers slim. To accommodate the owner
requirements within the given height limits, additional program area is provided in two horizontal building parts,
called “Bars”. The Bars create a horizontal layering, these horizontal striations float within an urban forest of vertical
elements. Each lifted bar is oriented to find the most open views within the urban forest. 50 meters up, the best views
are south and west while higher up (150 meters) the views open up towards the east. The building negotiates between
the aggressively vertical and a human scaled horizon and ensures that our site takes on a recognizable identity and
becomes a unique composition within the overall masterplan.
ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN CONCEPT
The design of the towers aims at providing apartments with maximized facade surface for optimal natural ventilation.
With a majority of small apartment units at 84㎡, we have designed a compact tower foot print to allow for a high
amount of corner units and ensure well lit apartments. Towers are inherently removed from the city they occupy.
Circulation is linear and chance social interactions occur only in ground floor lobbies or awkward elevator rides. We
propose a building that triples the amount of ground floor - triples the amount of social interaction and reintroduces
the idea of neighborhood within the tower complex. Units in the bars are given a visible and direct access to their
roof-scape in order to encourage an activation of the outdoor realm.Simultaneously, the aggregation of horizontal and
vertical elements combines to provide datum for comprehending scale. Rather than a 220 meter high structure, the
building is perceived in increments of 10 - 12 floors interrupted by gardens and public space. The majority of residents
can therefore reach a ‘ground’ level within six flights of stairs or less.
